Terme dei Papi is a wonderful day trip destination located near Rome, perfect for those looking to unwind in natural thermal waters. The warm water of the hot spring is soothing and stays at a comfortable temperature throughout the year. Compared to a traditional beach vacation, where you typically bask in the sun or dip in the sea, a visit to Terme dei Papi offers a more peaceful, relaxing experience even in winter. I visited thermal baths in february and the 38 celsius (100.4F) water was just perfect. The thermal pools provide a calming alternative to the saltwater of the sea, allowing you to enjoy a tranquil experience in natural, mineral-rich water. In contrast to the busy beaches, Terme dei Papi offers a slower pace and the comfort of warm, relaxing waters. The thermal spa experience allowed me to focus on relaxation and spa treatments such as a Turkish bath in a natural grotto that gets its warmth from natural thermal waters.
Terme dei Papi is easily accessible by car, and it takes just over an hour to reach from Rome. Parking is available right in front of the entrance, making it very convenient for visitors. If you're planning to visit for swimming only, you can go directly to the pool ticket counter, where you'll be guided to the locker rooms and the pool area. If you'd like to book a spa treatment, you will need to make your reservation in the large entrance hall.
The pool area has both men's and women's changing rooms where you can change your clothes. After changing into your swimsuit, you can leave your belongings in a locker that can be locked with a wristband or key card. The lockers are quite small and located in a shared space. Note that you must take a shower before swimming, but it is important to keep your swimsuit on. Hairdryers are available in the changing rooms. You can leave your bathrobe and swim sandals in the hallway leading to the pool area. Then, just head to the warm water and enjoy!
A couple of hours can easily pass in the pool, especially if you’re motivated to do a little exercise first. The deeper part of the pool has slightly cooler water, perfect for a swim workout or water jogging. The shallow end has warmer water, and it's so shallow that you can comfortably sit in it. The water temperature is probably around 37-40 degrees Celsius, depending on the water flow and your position in the pool. The bottom of the pool is uneven due to the buildup of calcium deposits over time. Most guests enjoy chatting and floating with the long pool floats available at the poolside. The atmosphere in the pool area is surprisingly peaceful, and the shallow end is also great for children.
What to Bring:
Be sure to pack a towel, swimsuit, bathrobe, and flip-flops. These essentials will keep you comfortable as you move from the pool to the spa and dining areas. At Terme dei Papi, it is common to wear a bathrobe throughout the complex, including the pool bar and lunch restaurant. You are not allowed to bring your own food or drinks into the pool area, but it’s a good idea to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated while enjoying the pool.
