About Renting a Car at Rome Fiumicino Airport and Driving in Italy

Renting a car at Rome's Fiumicino Airport is extremely convenient. I would highly recommend choosing a car rental company with an office located on the third floor of the cylindrical-shaped building connected to Terminal 2. This building can be easily accessed via a moving walkway, allowing you to avoid the hassle of taking a shuttle bus to an offsite car rental location.

Once you arrive, pick a car with the appropriate insurance coverage for your needs. If you plan to drive in the city center, opt for the smallest car possible to navigate the narrow streets and tight parking spaces. On the other hand, if you’re heading to a destination farther away via the autostrada (highway), choose a car that’s comfortable to drive at highway speeds, which in Italy are up to 130 km/h. It’s also worth avoiding the cheapest rental companies to ensure that you’ll receive reliable customer service in case of any issues.

Realistically, the most likely problem you might face during your rental period is a flat tire, either from poorly maintained roads or hitting the high curbs in city centers. Keep this in mind when considering additional insurance or services. Also, always keep water and snacks in the car—waiting for roadside assistance under the blazing Italian sun, hungry and thirsty, is far from pleasant.

When picking up your rental car, you’ll find it parked on one of the upper levels of the same cylindrical building. Sanitary facilities are available on the third floor if you need a quick break before hitting the road. Before driving off, inspect the car for any existing scratches or dents, and take photos to document its condition.

To exit, collect a ticket at the parking gate, and drive down the steep, one-way ramp. Insert the ticket at the exit gate and retrieve it, which will raise the barrier for you to leave. The route out of the airport is straightforward and designed with tourists in mind. Drive confidently toward the G.R.A. (Grande Raccordo Anulare), the ring road that circles Rome. Be cautious of taxis, as they tend to drive at high speeds near the airport.

Tips for Driving in Italy

  • Traffic Rules and Signage: Italians take traffic signals and speed limits less rigidly than some other countries, but it’s essential that you follow the rules. Keep an eye out for signs indicating limited traffic zones (ZTL). Entering these without permission can result in hefty fines.
  • Toll Roads: Most highways in Italy are tolled. You’ll either receive a ticket upon entering and pay when exiting or encounter automatic toll booths. Carry cash or a credit card for payment. Look for the white “carta” signs for credit cards. Yellow “Telepass” lanes are for those who have subscribed to the service.
  • Gas Stations: Gas stations on highways are more expensive than those in towns. Most stations have self-service (fai da te) and full-service (servito) options. Be aware that some stations close during lunchtime, especially in rural areas.
  • Parking: In cities, blue lines indicate paid parking zones, while white lines are typically free. Yellow lines are reserved for residents or specific vehicles. Always double-check signs to avoid fines or towing.
  • Driving Style: Italian drivers are assertive, and the pace of traffic can be brisk. Defensive driving and keeping a cool head are key.
  • Emergency Kit: By law, your rental car must be equipped with a reflective vest and a warning triangle. Ensure these are present in the vehicle, as you’ll need to use them in case of a breakdown.

Driving in Italy can be a delightful experience, giving you the freedom to explore beautiful countryside and charming towns at your own pace. Just remember to stay aware, prepare for the unexpected, and enjoy the journey!
